The Daisy Chain Effect!

One of my favourite memories from our childhood was returning home from school on a sunny day to find my mother in the garden, lying on the sun lounger, basking in the afternoon sun…beautifully tanned from her naturally olive skin (just a bit jealous!) and watching Wimbledon on the TV that she had dragged out into the garden so she could watch the latest Navratilova v Evert- Lloyd tennis match on the telly…oh yes, this was normal!

Many an afternoon we spent playing in the garden during those hazy…lazy summer days, jumping in and out of the paddling pool, spraying water from the hosepipe to cool us down when it got too hot, picking apples off the trees at the bottom of the garden, and scrambling amongst the branches of the tree was so much fun…! We loved to make things out of wood, practice our sewing skills, we made our own fancy dress outfits and created long lengths of daisy chains, placing them delicately on our heads! Today the beautiful, humble daisy represents a much stronger, symbolic image for me…

It is referred to as a common, dainty and pretty flower which holds an air of pure simplicity as it defies gravity with its heavy head perched on a tall, thin stalk, its surprising how strong it is as it stands in the breeze, carefree and understated. I compare this to the beauty of human life where the stem is our body stood upright, each petal of the flower symbolising every aspect of our emotional strength swaying in the breeze of life. A fine balancing act, it remains intact because every petal, although barely attached, has it’s job to do so as not to fall to the ground! Each of the petals representing the Six Universal emotions: happiness, sadness, fear, disgust, anger & surprise, as it skilfully reflects on these nuances of emotion & wellbeing of human life.

The wonderful simplicity of the ‘Daisy’ allows us to have a sense of openness & vulnerability so that we can experience intense emotional reactions without being engulfed in the emotion to a point where we might fall apart and this helps us grow. It manages life’s daily challenges with ease by developing wholesome relationships with others and those are the building blocks to living in harmony in our lives.

Just as the daisy links with others in the chain, ‘The Daisy Chain Effect’, for me, is the link with each other that provides greater overall strength for our emotional health & wellbeing!”
