In Sophro Balance we use all our senses…sight, sound, smell, taste and touch, as they form an integral part of Sophrology, creating the stronger mind-body connection necessary for the imagination to thrive, because the appeal of the senses plays an important part in our health & wellbeing! You will experience the nuance of each of the senses to find happiness and joy throughout The 6 Steps to your Wellbeing program.
Sight…
Our eyes focus on 50 different objects every second so what can you see from where you are sitting or standing now? Can you distinguish the 10million different colours or if you close your eyes can you see a rainbow in your minds eye, can you notice the reds, the oranges, the yellows, through to the greens, the blues, the violets and indigo to darkest black? I use this rainbow of colour as part of an uplifting mood exercise that adds a sense of happiness and joy to your day!
Sound…
The ears…the ‘organs for hearing’ but also an aid to balance, they are the tools for us to hear the sounds of the birds in the morning, make us happy when we hear our favourite song on the radio or they alert us to imminent danger and they play a crucial part in our sense of balance so we don’t fall! In a Sophro Balance practice we prepare by noticing the sounds inside the room…the sounds outside the room and the sounds from your own body, your breathing or your heart beat which helps to calm the mind.
Smell…
Words such as scent, aroma, perfume conjure up a lovely sense of smell, we can get pure enjoyment from smelling the roses or breathing in the fresh air when by contrast we might turn our nose up at a bad smell or terrible odour! The breath is used as the foundation of a variety of alternative holistic therapies everywhere and in Sophrology we use the breath to focus our awareness inside, we use it to release tension by breathing out…and letting the tension go, and that allows us to relax deeply in a state called Sophro Dynamic Relaxation.
Taste…
Now, how can taste manifest itself as part of a holistic practice? Well, like the raisin test in mindfulness, we use it as a metaphor to imagining the flavour or taste of something during a guided visualisation that can reinforce the practice so you begin to make a connection between your body and your mind. It is very powerful, and when we stand with our feet firmly planted on the ground, we visualise our roots, we see, hear, taste, touch and smell them, and that connects us fully to the Universe!
Touch…
Frequently used through each level of the wellbeing program it begins by placing your fingertips lightly on the Chakra points of the body in turn, we notice all or any of the physical sensations in that area enabling our mind to relax at the beginning of the practice. We also have several ‘Integration Pauses’ during the course of a session that allows us time to notice any sensations, feelings or vibrations during the practice and we journal our feelings at the end to reinforce our experiences…this can be very enlightening!
