Sophrology works particularly well in children (as well as adults) especially if they have experienced any bullying, or stress and anxiety at a young age. It builds on their inner resilience and awareness and provides them with the tools they need to relax naturally in a gentle, simple way.
For those of us that suffer from frequent bouts of anxiety we can greatly benefit from Sophrology as the techniques focus on our breathing and brings a sense of calm back to our minds & bodies. It is fair to say that many wellbeing methods are developed with adults in mind, and we often delve into the ‘problem‘ which requires a rational approach, when Sophrology, in comparison, focuses on building our inner strengths and our self-awareness.
It has been present in Europe for helping children in schools with their exams and interview practice, but also for certain physical conditions, and developmental disorders such as ADHD, autism, stress, insomnia, and anxiety. It has been found to also be effective with ADHD or ADH-type behaviours that it is used more these days for those with difficulty concentrating on tasks that require patience.
Sophrology uses the mind and body: To help build awareness of our thoughts, feelings and sensations, and connect with our inner selves. This can be useful for children as it allows them to practice Sophrology techniques with their whole being – from head to toe!
Children know how to go with the flow: Whereas adults can get obsessed by the outcomes and achievements, or about getting things ‘spot on’, which can cloud our judgement. In children this is more likely to open them up to new experiences so they worry less about the results and are free to explore their thoughts, feelings and sensations.
Imagination is natural for children: Using visualisation techniques fit into the world of childhood, so their natural sense of adventure along with the 5 senses heightens their creativity. We learn how powerful our inner world is, and we can learn to channel that energy.
Sophrology uses movement: Through natural movement, those children that dread being told to ‘sit still‘, can engage in these techniques. Just knowing they can be comfortable and relaxed helps them focus their mind and body enabling them to have greater self-control.
It is easy to learn: This works well with children that need stability as well as simplicity, and as the exercises are easy to learn, fitting into everyday life, it gives them a sense of achievement and they improve regularly over time. Breathing exercises have the effect of instantly calming you, making you able to master the inner world.
Meditation is a tool for life: It can be surprising to see how difficult thoughts and feelings manifest as aches and pains, but you can see these melt away as you become more aware of them.
Through learning to meditate children can call upon those skills later into adulthood or whenever they need to and enabling them to lead a more harmonious, balanced life.
