We often hear about how great mindfulness and meditation can be, we hear about how good it is for us, the benefits you get from regular practice, how relaxing and calming it can be, and the effects it can have on your overall wellbeing should not be underestimated! I agree, but one thing I noticed when I tried mindfulness for the first time was how difficult it was to stay focused on the breath for very long or how my thoughts continued to race through my mind, so I needed to find something else to help me relax…
Then, I stumbled across Sophrology, the practice of combining Buddhism, Yoga and Zen that uses all three to enable a person to relax deeply in a state called Dynamic Relaxation – an alternative to meditation! But I, like you, had never heard of it before so I wondered about the real benefits of such a curious practice, something that sounds more scientific than holistic, however an alternative therapy that may not have been embraced in the UK as well as it has been in other parts of Europe such as France, Switzerland & Spain, it still has its place.
So what makes Sophrology easier to do compared to other more traditional forms of practice? Well, it is the way in which it uses the breath combined with movement and visualisation that makes it easy to do and very effective for your overall health and wellbeing. Imagine you are sat quietly on a chair doing your usual mindfulness meditation, when just as you are deep in this moment of calm, you suddenly hear the mower starting up outside or the postman drops your letters through the door or the dog next door barks, and no matter how hard you try you cannot return to that moment of peace & tranquillity!
Sophrology is more effective at keeping your focus in the present moment because, rather than leaving you to bring your mind back to the present when it wanders, it provides a beautiful calming practice that brings together a mind & body connection using a simple guided technique with movement and visualisations that can be incredibly relaxing. It will help reduce stress and anxiety, provide better sleep quality and improve your self-confidence as well as bringing about feelings of positivity.
Sophro Balance – I use Sophrology, a form of mindfulness, to bring positivity into people’s lives, to enable them to experience happiness & joy more easily. Remember that mindfulness, like many other holistic therapies, is great for your overall health and wellbeing, so doing whatever works best for you is the key to living life well…give yourself that gift!

Hugging Breath – Calming & Balancing
Try this easy breathing technique called the Hugging Breath that I also use with my clients to help relax them if they cannot get to sleep.
- Sitting or lying down in bed before sleeping.
- Put your arms straight out in front of you, palms of your hands facing each other, thumbs upwards towards the ceiling.
- Now bend your elbows, cross your arms and tuck your fingers under your armpits with your thumb resting on your body.
- The places where your thumbs rest are acupressure points that will help rebalance your energies.
- Now breathe in fully into the lungs (just the upper part of the body, not down into the abdomen)
- Breathe in until your lungs are very full and you feel the air right up into the shoulders.
- Breathe out…then…breathe in and out repeating 36 times
